Through my engagement as an empanelled designer in a Pilot Project undertaken by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, I had the privilege of working alongside Ms. Priyam Hazarika. I also had the opportunity to interact with artisans nurtured by her and explore their water hyacinth (Pani Meteka) crafts, which demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship, design sensibility, product innovation, and a strong ability to translate traditional skills into products aligned with contemporary market preferences. Their thoughtful product diversification, contemporary aesthetics, and functional design language reflect considerable commercial potential, while the sustainable treatment of water hyacinth—from harvesting and processing to the finished product—further enhances the value of the craft. The experience was both insightful and inspiring, demonstrating how indigenous materials, refined design intervention, and skilled craftsmanship can converge to create distinctive, sustainable, and market-responsive products.

My journey with the Syntein Cluster in Mawsynram, Meghalaya began through my association with Mrs. Priyam Hazarika. As a designer, I saw an opportunity to combine my design sensibilities with the artisans’ traditional expertise.
Since 2021, I have conducted six Design and Technical Development Workshops (DTDW), focusing on learning, experimentation and innovation. Over the years, I have seen the artisans grow more confident and adapt to new designs.
Today, many of these products reach wider markets through the continued efforts of Mrs. Priyam Hazarika and NKSPCL. I believe that with stronger production tools, technology and market support, the Syntein Cluster can create even greater opportunities for its artisans.
For me, Syntein is where tradition meets possibility—creating a sustainable future for both the craft and the communities that keep it alive.
